"Collaboration and Co-Creation: The Role of Community and Social Technology in Emergencies"

The American Red Cross took the lead in starting a national conversation about how social networking tools could facilitate better crisis response and improve collaboration between emergency-response groups and agencies. Its’ actions drew the attention of the White House, FEMA and CNN, along with coverage in many influential journals and blogs. More importantly, it started conversations with led to the formation of several working groups that will produce actionable.  Hear how this 2010 SNCR Excellence Award winner, the American Red Cross, is using online communities, social and mobile technologies to transform institutional disaster response. Gloria Huang will share the American Red Cross’ vision for an organization that nimbly and efficiently mixes long-honored disaster response procedures with the public’s real time input. We’ll give you a peek into the process that will enable our organization and the public to engage, partner, and empower one another efficiently during crisis. Hint: it involves lots of internal training, buy-in, digital volunteers, real-time content, real-time responsiveness, transparency, and a flexible and social aptitude.
