Occupy Oakland presented a host of challenges for the city of Oakland. Get an inside view into these challenges as well as lessons learned during the encampment and beyond.

Presenters

Karen Boyd

Karen Boyd is the citywide communications director for the City of Oakland. She is a seasoned ommunicator with more than 20 years’ experience directing strategic communications programs for public agencies, including city and county governments and federal agencies. Prior to her career at the city of Oakland, she spent 11 years as an environmental consultant working on community relations related to water quality and hazardous waste cleanup projects.


Chris Bolton

Sergeant Chris Bolton is chief of staff to Chief Howard Jordan. He joined the ranks of the
Oakland Police Department in 1999, and has worked a variety of assignments, including patrol, officer, academy instructor and internal affairs.


Susan Mernit

Susan Mernit is editor and publisher of Oakland Local, a news and community hub for
Oakland. A former vice president at AOL and Netscape, and a former Yahoo senior director, she was consulting program manager for The Knight News Challenge, and is a 2012 Stanford Carlos McClatchy Fellow. She is a former Senior Fellow for the Reporting on Health project at University of Southern California, and a facilitator for The Knight Digital Media Center at The Annenberg School of Journalism, USC.
