Recently, the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at the University of Alabama completed the largest study of leadership ever in the PR field. The survey profiled the digital revolution, gender and generational shifts, a divide between leaders and followers, and the growing need for soft skills in future leaders. Bruce K. Berger is also research director of The Plank Center for Leadership in PR and editor of the Organizational Communication Research Center for the Institute for Public Relations (IPR). In 2012, he received The Pathfinder Award from IPR for lifetime contributions to PR research.

Russell was inducted into the College of Fellows in 1992 and serves as its 2013 chair.
