In defense of puns

Before I offer a brief defense of puns, let me make it clear that I’m not an absolutist when it comes to the right to speak puns. You can count me among the rational majority who find more shame than honor in them.
The low opinion of the pun among the general population is evident by the way habitual punners always wince after delivering one, often with an arm raised in anticipation of a blow from an innocent victim.
The pun has an image problem among writing experts, too, for whom it enjoys a position somewhere between the cliché and plagiarism, just a couple of rungs above extortion.
