Tools you can use: Finding a job with PRSA’s help

March 1, 2012

As I was finishing my MBA and about to start my job search, my grandfather told me to take a stack of résumés and go knocking door-to-door in Manhattan.

“Just think, in one of those skyscrapers you might be able to visit 75 companies in one morning,” he said. But I knew times had changed since he last looked for a job, so I set up the latest in technology — my electric typewriter with self-correcting ribbon — and started typing.

Job seekers need to be on top of technology — so PRSA does, too.  To support your job search, we strive to give you the latest tools and resources that you need to find career success.  That’s why we’ve redesigned our Jobcenter twice in the past five years. Well-designed job boards lead to more traffic from job seekers, which leads to more postings from employers, leading to more job seekers. It’s a virtuous circle.

In a typical week, we attract between 25,000-30,000 unique visitors to our Jobcenter.  Visitors scour 2,248 job postings and have posted a total of 8,000-plus résumés.

While this month’s issue of Tactics focuses specifically on your career, PRSA is about helping you with your career all year long.  Whether we’re raising the profession’s visibility through advocacy, providing you with award-winning case studies for inspiration or hosting webinars to share new skills, our primary purpose is to support your success as a professional.

The past few years have been challenging, and we understand that there are times when every professional is more focused on “getting a job” than managing a career. Jobs are at the heart of our Jobcenter.

Statistics tell us that most Jobcenter visitors conduct a query looking for one particular type of job after another.

But when focusing on finding the right position, don’t overlook the tools and benefits available on our website. Make sure that you:

  • Browse our member directory. It’s a great networking opportunity, allowing you to reach out to colleagues and share key aspects of your background and goals.  You can search by location, zip code, Chapter, industry sector and many other criteria.

  • Create a job alert.  As a PR professional, your day is often hectic.  A simple job alert will “push” jobs that suit your objectives to your inbox every day.

  • Sign up with a mentor. Overseen by PRSA’s College of Fellows, our Mentor Match can help you find an experienced professional who will share their expertise.  We also have members who answer your questions through our  “Ask the Experts” roundtable.  You can also receive advice on your résumé, cover letter and upcoming job interviews.

  • Tap into your Chapter or Professional Interest Section Attend a meeting, reach out to Chapter leadership and check the Chapter website — some Chapters have their own job bulletin boards that are specifically targeted to local employers. PRSA’s Professional Interest Sections are also led by professionals with excellent connections in their respective fields.

  • Connect with colleagues. Use social media platforms such as PRSA’s Facebook pages and LinkedIn Group, which has nearly 9,000 members.

These are your resources; use them. Go beyond the job postings to connect with our community and join the conversation. PRSA works because we’re all working together.
