Your Public Relations and Communications Community

In a Carolina State of Mind

January 8, 2014

On Dec. 2, Joel Curran stepped down as managing director of MSLGROUP’s New York office to become vice chancellor for communications and public affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated with a journalism degree in 1986.

It’s a new position, created by Chancellor Carol Folt shortly after she became UNC’s first female chief executive on Oct. 12. Curran will oversee the University Relations staff, which produces stories and content for the school’s website and social media.

Here, he talks about his decision to move away from the agency world and his take on shaping the next generation of professional communicators.
