PR professionals are often responsible for planning and promoting events. Traditionally, we stage clichéd photos for the press, which might include a line of officials standing behind a strand of red tape before they perform a standard “ribbon cutting,” or a row of VIPs sticking shovels into dirt. These photos may be featured in hyper-local media, but larger media refuse to run them.

PR pros can easily learn to create newsworthy, visually interesting events that capture reporters’ imaginations — without busting the budget. In this session, you will:

  • Discover what reporters have said about the best — and worst — groundbreakings, ribbon-cuttings and grand openings they’ve had to cover.
  • Participate in hands-on brainstorming activities to come up with innovative and attention-grabbing event ideas that you will present and post via social media channels.
  • Hear from former reporters who will provide real-time feedback on the events you develop.

Presenter

Kirkpatrick is an award-winning PR professional who pioneered social media for the largest county government in the Washington, D.C., area, and created a speaker series for its 16,000 employees that featured famous headliners, including best-selling journalist Tom Friedman, syndicated columnist Judith “Miss Manners” Martin and former White House Correspondent Helen Thomas.
