On-Site Seminar

Already know how to search and monitor news, blogs and Twitter by keyword? Know how to use widgets, subscribe to podcasts and embed YouTube clips in blog posts? Are you ready to learn more? If the answer is yes, this workshop is for you. If not, consider enrolling in the New Media PR Boot Camp first.

The Advanced New Media PR Workshop is a one-day seminar designed to help you fine tune your strategic understanding of social media and update your online public relations capabilities. For those public relations practitioners looking to build on a strong, existing foundation of online communications knowledge and specialized expertise, the Advanced New Media PR Workshop offers a breadth and depth of information through live demonstrations, exercises and “real world” case studies to advance your new media communications capabilities to the next level.

This seminar is offered in a Wi-Fi environment, so you get hands-on experience using the latest new media tools and services on your own laptop computer.

You’ll learn about:

  • Blogger relations: Finding influential bloggers and the rules of engagement.
  • Press release SEO: Guide to the campaign keyword selection process.
  • How to draft and publish a social media press release online for free.
  • Pitching social sites: Dos and don’ts for pitching through Digg and Delicious.
  • Content strategy: Deciding between original vs. aggregated content creation approaches.
  • The explosive growth of online video, plus tools and ideas for leveraging it for online public relations.
  • A strategic framework for deciding which new media channels make sense for your organization.
  • Twitter, Friendfeed, Ning and other emerging online resources.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Attendees must bring a laptop with wireless Internet access capability, be proficient at logging into a non-secure wireless hotspot, and be comfortable pointing, clicking, dragging and dropping in a Windows environment. This is a PC-based course. While numerous participants have successfully completed the workshop on a Mac, demonstrations are conducted on Microsoft Windows XP. Vista users also should be prepared to make any necessary adjustments.

Participants must have administrative privileges to download and install third-party software on the hard drive of their computers. Specific applications vary, but they may include open source, Java or Adobe AIR applications. It is impossible for participants to effectively monitor, participate and engage constituents online if they are not at liberty to access and utilize the same, popular social media applications used to drive the digital dialogue.

Participants also will need the ability to access the Internet in the absence of their own secure proxy server, should have Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Firefox 3 or higher, Flash Player 9 or higher, and a secondary Google Gmail account that can be used to sign up for Web-based services and that will not interfere with their productivity if excessive unsolicited email accumulates at that address.
