Letter from the Chair: Use Professional Development to Gain Experience

As new professionals, we’ve got a lot going on — energy, dedication, enthusiasm, high-expectations. What we don’t have is experience. Experience takes time, but a full-time job isn’t the only way to get it. You can use professional development to gain experience and enhance your skill set.

Professional development is the “extra-curricular” stuff that impresses employers. This is the stuff that helps you to expand your capabilities. And for those of us who are still job-hunting: This is the stuff that shows future interviewers that you are dedicated to your profession.

So how do you get this, professional development?

As a member of the New Pros of PRSA, you can volunteer to help the Executive Committee and gain experience in any number of things that employers would find attractive, including blogging, social media management, project management, and PR research.

If you’d like to hear more, shoot me an email or reply to this post in the e-Groups. I’ll set up a time that we can chat and figure out your interests and time limitations, and by the end of this year, you can have experience that impresses employers.

Janet Krenn, Chair

Membership Update

We lost 5 members in April. Of course we didn't misplace them, most decided that they have "outgrown" the Section — they are not new professionals any longer — and they join another PRSA Professional Interest Section. That is how it should be. We pledge to our members that we will offer the best-in-class opportunities to grow through networking, learning and developing the skills and abilities to success in PR business.

I hope you agree that we live up to this promise. But if you believe otherwise, let me know.
