Letter from the Chair: We're Making Big Moves this Fall

For me, working in public relations is an exercise in living in the now. Respond quickly. Be punctual. Promote today.

Volunteering with the New Pros has been a fun challenge because as much as we work to support benefits today, we look ahead to more fantastic things to come. For instance, between now and the end of the year, we're working on

Stay tuned to our Facebook page and eGroups because although we don't yet have all of the details finalized, we're very close, and we will be hitting the ground running any day now! As always, if you'd like to be part of helping bring these and other benefits to your fellow New Pros contact me for ways you can volunteer.

New Pros Section Events

Section Brown Bag Teleseminar – On Friday, September 10 at noon the New Pros hosted a FREE Brown Bag teleseminar "Going Pro: Taking Your Social Media Skills to the Business Setting." During the presentation and open discussion, you will learn how to:

  • Apply your social media currency to a business setting.
  • Authentically engage with key stakeholders on key points, rather than “messaging.”
  • Identify and use tools that provide the best results (instead of the most hype).
  • Find opportunities to expand your projects and your own online reach.

Instructor Scott Stratten's tagline for his company Un-Marketing.com is “Stop marketing. Start engaging.”  Stratten is an expert in viral, social, and authentic marketing which he calls “un-marketing.” Over 42,000 people follow his daily rantings on Twitter and was voted one of the top influencers on the site with over 65 million users. His recent Tweet-a-thon raised over $16,000 for child hunger, in less than 12 hours. One of his viral marketing movies was chosen by the Chicago Bears as their biggest motivator towards their Super Bowl run a few years ago, while another made their client over $5 million in 7 days. Stratten’s recently appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Mashable.com, USA Today, CNN.com and Fast Company.

Membership Update

Talk about ROI! Within days after I ran an appeal for bloggers in our August newsletter, three New Pros volunteered to write first-person accounts of their lives in various PR sectors. I am still calling-out for authors who work in Sports PR (December 2010) and Entertainment PR (January 2011). Come on, New Pros, I know you are out there.

July closed on a down note as Section membership slipped from 495 to 486.We have seen a net gain of 6 members for the year, though we are below the July 2009 level (509) and short of our 2010 membership goal (534).
