Online Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership (May 2012)

How did your online studies at Gonzaga University directly benefit your career?

The online Organizational Leadership program gave me the skills and knowledge of holistic and strategic ways of thinking and viewing situations through various lenses. In the Research Methods course, I did research on telecommuting as a benefit to work/life balance. The project directly related to my work because at that time we were designing a formal telecommuting program. I also worked on a Total Rewards communication plan for the Organizational Communication course, which was timely in my organization as we were developing our current Total Rewards program.

What courses have proven most valuable in your current work?

The Organizational Communication course was very helpful because much of my current work involves communication to all areas of the organization. The Organizational Development (OD) course was very interesting because my organization has an internal Organizational Development team within HR. Prior to taking the course, I really didn’t know what OD was, and I found it to be extremely interesting, especially the techniques used like appreciative inquiry. The Leadership and Imagination course helped me learn how to see situations through different lenses and perspectives.

Online Master of Arts in Communication and Leadership Studies (May 2012)

How did your online studies at Gonzaga University directly benefit your career?
One of the greatest career opportunities I had actually required me to miss a semester of the online Master of Arts in Communication and Leadership Studies program and delay my education. I went to sea in support of Continuing Promise 2010, a humanitarian and civic assistance program onboard the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7)that took us to eight Central American countries in four months to deliver medical, dental and veterinarian support to people in need. I applied my education at sea as I led a team of 14 U.S. Marine and U.S. Navy journalists and photographers, and provided the mission commander with direct strategic support. At sea, and still today, I use communication consultant training to educate coworkers and colleagues about the importance of communication.

Can you describe how your online Gonzaga University experience prepared you for your job?
Gonzaga University’s online Communication and Leadership Studies program aligns theory with practical application. I searched for a full year for a master’s program that supported a career in strategic communication. Finding a Communication and Leadership Studies program that also offered a certification in Servant Leadership was definitely a win-win! Overall, the theory validated my personal and professional ideologies and professional approaches. The classes also provided me with additional tools, like a communication audit and research tactics that helped me evaluate our organization’s internal communication from a clearer vantage point. Most importantly, it’s the amazing Communication and Leadership Studies staff that makes this program more than a success – they make it a lifestyle change. The professional staff was there to always help me find context and applicability in my daily work, so I was able to apply what I was learning to my daily work deliverables.
