Summary

Unintentional injuries caused by children playing on cracked asphalt, littered with garbage, broken glass, and other tainted materials, account for one in five admissions to St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH). In partnership with The Standing Partnership, the hospital initiated Healthy Kids at Play, a community-owned health and wellness initiative. SLCH and The Standing Partnership developed a community education and awareness program, which resulted in: twenty- five community applications in the first year of the initiative; fourteen new, safe play spaces; thirty-three child health programs; and thirty-two mobile health van visits to 13 sites, which reached 835 children.
