2008 Silver Anvil Award Winner – Community Relations – Government
Salinas, California may be known as “America’s Salad Bowl” for its vast production of vegetables but ironically Salinas residents consume little of what they grow. As a result, more than 70 percent of residents are overweight or obese. These realities prompted the Monterey County Health Department to employ an ambitious community-wide communications campaign to mobilize every sector of their community to embrace change. The partnerships, policies and promotions that resulted from this 18-month campaign have fundamentally changed the look of Salinas, contributing to unprecedented improvements in health behaviors and marked decreases in obesity and diabetes rates.
