The Mountain Area Safety Task Force selected Cook & Schmid to design a two-year education and outreach program. The goal: inform Southern California mountain residents about increased fire danger and motivate them to take preventive action. Cook & Schmid used primary research to establish benchmarks, inform strategic planning, and measure program results; developed a memorable brand; and convinced residents that “a thinner forest is a healthy forest.” Results exceeded objectives to increase significant behavior change by 5 to 10 percent and raise awareness and knowledge of specific methods for reducing wildfire risk by 15 to 20 percent.
