In Memoriam: Harvey Greisman, 61

February 23, 2010

Harvey Greisman, a well-respected corporate communicator and PR leader, passed away after suffering a heart attack this past Saturday. He was 61.

Greisman, a former PRSA member and board member of the PRSA Foundation, was currently working as a PR consultant and was formerly employed by MasterCard as group executive, worldwide communications, before stepping down in November. Greisman also held in-house communications positions for several large organizations, including: IBM, GTE (now Verizon), Allied Corporation (now Honeywell) and the United Nations.

A 1970 graduate of Colgate University, Greisman was a trustee of the Arthur W. Page Society and author of the book “Beyond Vietnam: Public Opinion and Foreign Policy.” He is also known for testifying before Congress about foreign policy issues and has spoken about public relations at numerous industry events.

During a roundtable at the PRSA Board of Director’s meeting in January 2009, Greisman discussed the state of the profession and the best ways to communicate and measure in the current economic environment.

“It’s a great opportunity to look at what we do, to think about how much more efficient we could be, to prioritize more than we ever have and to use technology whenever you can as a means of being more efficient without totally obliterating the one-to-one personal relationships that are also part and parcel of the communicator’s world,” he said.

Greisman is survived by his wife Susan and three children. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Temple Israel in Westport, Conn. Memorials may be made to the Harvey Greisman Memorial Fund through the American Heart Association.

Ward White says:

A fine professional and an even finer person. A man who thought hard and long about the profession, its ethics and its future. A valuable and long-time driving force in the Institute for Public Relations. Many will miss him sorely, his friends in public relations prominent among them.

I have only just heard about Harvey passing away. He was my client while running my Strategic Communications and PR Business. He was one of the most genuine and astute people I have ever met and a real pleasure to work for. Harvey spoke about his family with a lot of love.I am sure he will be sorely missed in both his personal and professional life. May 24, 2010

Diana Angelini says:

I just today learned of Harvey's passing. I am so deeply saddened, he was one of the NICEST people I every knew. Gentle, compassionate, caring, worked too hard, cared too much, worried alot, loved his kids so deeply, adored his wife who was one of my best friends. He is one of the very few people in this world that I will always remember, life is so short, I am sorry I never got to say goodbye. Diana
