Remembering Carl F. Hawver, APR, Fellow PRSA

Dr. Carl Fullerton Hawver, APR, Fellow PRSA, died  Sunday at his home Ingleside at Rock Creek, Washington, D.C. He was 96. Hawver was a longtime member of PRSA, and served as its national president in 1974.

Hawver was born April 29, 1914 in Fredericksburg, Ohio, son of Harley H. and Carrie Fullerton Hawver.  He attended Adrian College and, after earning a degree from Bowling Green State University, he taught high school in Ohio and California. His teaching was interrupted by his volunteering and serving as the CO of a U.S. Navy Armed Guard Unit, with service at Omaha Beach, Murmansk, and in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Moving to Washington, D.C. in 1950, he contributed his many talents in executive roles in the Republican Congressional Committee, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the National Consumer Finance Association.  

For nearly 60 years Hawver was an active member of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and as a long-time church school instructor.

He married Frances Jewell “Judy” Renick on April 15, 1935, and they enjoyed 72 years together until her passing in 2007.  Hawver is survived by his three children, Doctors Karl Derek (Marian “Polly” Martin), of Kensington, Md.; Dennis A. (Judy Anderson), of West Windsor, N.J.; and Karen J. Hawver, of Londonderry, N.H.; as well as eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date.  Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, One Chevy Chase Circle, Washington, D.C., 20015, where he will be interred after cremation.
