Smartphones are becoming popular bedfellows. According to a report released Wednesday by mobile services provider iPass, 60 percent of mobile workers sleep with their smartphones in the bedroom, and 44 percent keep them within arm’s reach.
The report, which surveyed more than 3,700 mobile employees from 1,000 companies, highlights workers’ increasing desire to stay connected, even when getting some shut-eye. Of those who sleep within arm’s reach of their smartphone, 58 percent wake up during the night to check their phone, and 11 percent do so every night.
Morning routines aren’t the same either: 35 percent of respondents said they check their email before getting dressed, having breakfast or drinking their morning coffee. Only 16 percent wait until they arrive at the office to check their email.
So is this an example of admirable dedication to one's job, or a staying-connected overload? One thing’s for sure: downtime is a thing of the past. — Jason Woodward
