2014 PRSA Ethics Month Activities

September is Ethics Awareness Month at PRSA. This year’s theme is based on PRSA's Code of Ethics, Ethics Awareness Month seeks to inform and educate the public relations profession about ongoing issues and concerns regarding PR ethics. Brush up on your ethics knowledge with PRSA's ethics resources, and read commentary on ethical standards in PR here.

Below is a listing of PRSA's 2014 Ethics Month activities. You can continue to focus on ethics awareness in public relations by using the Twitter hashtag #PRethics, writing blog posts and other commentary focusing on ethical tenets in public relations, and organizing ethics programs for your PRSA chapter, district or section.

Ethical Standards Advisory Release

PRSA's Board of Ethics and Professional Standards released Ethical Standards Advisory – ES-19 (September 2014).

“Public Relations, Ethics, and You: Lessons Learned Outside the Classroom”

Much has been said and written to help the public relations professional better understand the importance of ethical practice in his or her work. But little outside the classroom is available for the young or soon-to-be-young professional to prepare him or her for “real life.”

In this interactive one-hour session, we will hear from public relations professionals…new as well as veteran…who will share their “lessons learned” and tips-to-get-started.

Kirk Hazlett, APR, Fellow PRSA, is Associate Professor of Communication at Curry College in Milton, MA. Before moving into academia, Kirk practiced nonprofit and government public relations for more than 35 years in the US as well as Asia, managing communication programs for healthcare and member services organizations as well as the US Army and US Air Force in Vietnam, the Philippines and the United States. Kirk has served as a member of PRSA’s national Board of Directors and has held leadership positions with PRSA Educators Academy and PRSA Northeast District as well as with the Boston and Hawaii PRSA chapters

Maria Sonin, Associate Director, Communications and Marketing, Ethics Officer Association

Solveig Maria Sonin leads all the association’s marketing and communications initiatives. She joined the team in May 2008 and since that time has developed a passion for organizational ethics, especially global anti-corruption and ethical culture-building.

Marlene Neill, APR, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Journalism, Public Relations & New Media, Baylor University; Member, BEPS Board of Directors

Marlene Neill, Ph.D., APR, is an assistant professor at Baylor University. She teaches courses in public relations, writing for new media and strategic communication research. She also serves as the faculty adviser for the Baylor PRSSA chapter. Her research interests include public relations management and ethics.

Philip Tate, APR, Senior Vice President, Luquire George Andrews; Member, BEPS Board of Directors

Philip Tate, APR, Fellow PRSA is in his second year on the Board of Ethical and Professional Standards (BEPS) and currently serves as Vice Chair of the PRSA College of Fellows. He previously served as PRSA national treasurer in 2010-2011 during his four years of service on the national board of directors (2008-2011) and has held everyleadership position in the PRSA Charlotte Chapter. He has spoken to a number of PRSA chapters on ethics topics and has been a regular contributor to the PRSAY blog.

The theme of this year's Ethics Month is "The New Era of Authenticity."

The theme focuses on how ethical choices develop and maintain authentic and long-lasting (not to mention mutually beneficial) relationships. To help reinforce that idea and remind you of the importance of a balanced ethical “diet,” the print/cut/fold poster was created by BEPS and designed to strengthen moral focus in the
