SOCIETY ANNOUNCES MULTICULTURAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Iowa State Students Recognized
NEW YORK (October 26, 2004) – Tiffany Daniels of Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, and Angelique Myers of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas, have been named the recipients of the 2004 Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Multicultural Affairs Scholarship. Each student will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
Maria Quidez, University of Hawaii (Manoa) and Dionne Spence, Morehead State University, received honorable mention recognition.
"In addition to the honor I feel for being chosen, I see the PRSA Multicultural Affairs Scholarship as another sign that public relations is the career for me," said Tiffany, a junior public relations major, minoring in political science and entrepreneurial studies, who aspires to pursue a career government public relations. "Being involved in PRSSA for the past two years has really opened my eyes and fueled my fire."
Tiffany is an active member of the ISU Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), serving as the Chapter's 2004-05 research director. She also mentors and participates in a number of campus volunteer activities.
At UMHB, Angelique is a staff reporter for the campus newspaper, The Bells, while also working as the midday on-air personality for Temple, Texas' #1 Hip-Hop station, KOOC-FM B106.3. A volunteer for the Special Olympics, Salvation Army, Indian Oaks Nursing Home, Sickle Cell Anemia Association and Habitat for Humanity, Angelique aspires to work in corporate, association and/or agency public relations.
"I enjoy every aspect of the communications field - from journalism to broadcasting and public relations - I believe this is what I was made for," explained Angelique, a senior mass communications/journalism major graduating in December. "I was extremely surprised and honored when I received word that I was one of the scholarship recipients - thanks PRSA!"
"From its inception, the Multicultural Section has recognized the need to support public relations education," said Gail Baker, APR, Fellow PRSA, vice president, public relations, University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla., and 2004 chair of PRSA's Multicultural Communications Professional Interest Section, sponsors of the scholarship program. "These scholarships are our way of letting students know that industry professionals are aware of their effort and are willing to assist them in joining our ranks."
The scholarship winners were honored at the PRSSA Awards Dinner, held Monday, Oct. 25, during the 2004 PRSSA National Conference, "Success and the City: Framing the Future of Public Relations," Oct. 22-26, in New York City.
The Multicultural Affairs Scholarship Program was established in 1989 to assist and recognize students for outstanding achievement and commitment to the practice of public relations. The program is open to full-time, four-year college communications students who are of multicultural ancestry.
