Each year, failure to mark underground utility lines before digging causes thousands of injuries and deaths, nearly 700,000 utility damages, and costly service disruptions to America’s gas, electric, cable, and television systems. The solution: the 811 "Call Before You Dig" campaign created by Fleishman-Hillard and Common Ground Alliance that increased awareness and use of 811 – a new federally-mandated number designed to save lives and protect our nation's utilities. Campaign efforts targeted likely diggers (professionals and DIYers) and unified a diverse coalition of industry, government and corporate partners to effectively deliver a simple, powerful message: "Safe digging is no accident!"
