Mommy blogs evolve into a cultural force

March 16, 2010

Once little more than glorified online photo albums, so-called “mommy blogs” have evolved into a cultural force to be reckoned with, The New York Times reports. Many now feature professional graphics, tag lines and labels like “PR Friendly,” and generate incomes ranging from $25 a month to, for an elite few, six figures.

At a recent “Bloggy Boot Camp” seminar in Baltimore attended by 90 women, mostly moms, topics included SEO, building a “comment tribe” and how to create an effective media kit, with much talk of defining your “brand.” The seminar, the sold-out first stop on a five-city tour, also included a presentation on the new Federal Trade Commission guidelines requiring bloggers to disclose their relationships with advertisers.

For many women, blogs are a place to converse and commiserate, and to find parenting role models. As the Times reports, mothers often prefer the candid experiences of other moms online — and the ability to discuss them interactively — to the dry, static pronouncements of experts in books and parenting magazines.

Some find the influx of corporate sponsors, freebies and promotions troubling, but others say the alliance between bloggers and corporate America gives women a voice in shaping the brands they consume.  — Greg Beaubien

Emily Foshee says:

Mommy bloggers are, indeed, a growing force not only culturally, but also economically. Moms are the largest target market in the world and are predicted to spend approximately $3 trillion by 2012. Mommy bloggers will be great brand advocates if they like a product or service, and if they don't like a company...well, remember Motrin?
