How One Community Created a New Focus on Diversity & Inclusion
June 18, 2021 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
When a police officer was caught on video arresting a woman and her daughters during an emotional encounter, the public reaction was widespread and negative. The city put together a Race and Culture Task Force to address the issues that surfaced in our community. Over the next eighteen months, this group would use an extensive communications and public engagement plan to engage residents in finding solutions.
After more than 82 public meetings and hundreds of traditional, virtual and social media messages, a set of 22 recommendations were made to City Council. The Council accepted the recommendations and during the past year, the city has made significant progress in implementing these improvements and continues to use communications and public outreach to keep the public informed and engaged.
