Business for Communicators: Applied Financial Acumen for Value Creation Certificate Program
March 31, April 7, 21, 27, May 5, 12, from 3-4:30 p.m. EDT
The more people who speak the language of business, the better business becomes. “Business for Communicators” provides the missing link of financial competence and confidence that too often keeps communicators quiet in business meetings.
Each module is highly applied and action-oriented for participants to learn through their current organization or one they aspire to work with.
All modules will be recorded so that participants can (re)listen or review them after the live date in preparation for the final exam. After successfully completing and passing the final assessment at the end of the program, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion and a digital badge. Participants also will be part of PRSA’s Online Community, an exclusive forum offering private access and interactive dialogue with other members taking the program.
Who This Is For
“Business for Communicators” is designed for communicators at any stage of a corporate career who are expected to not only “know the business,” but also clearly demonstrate how communication programs, initiatives and investments strategically support business objectives — using the language of business. No prior education in business or finance is required. Leaders with a more advanced understanding of firm financial performance measures will benefit from a comprehensive view of the firm’s operating environment as it relates to the practice of corporate communication. Regardless of experience or knowledge level, all participants will be equipped to share what they’ve learned with others and increase financial literacy across an organization.

Module 1: Assessing the Health of Your Internal Network
Wednesday, March 31, 2027; 3-4:30 p.m. EDT
Do you have the internal connections you need to succeed? We’ll begin by mapping your most important stakeholders, what matters most to them and assessing how well-connected you are across a variety of business functions to best serve those stakeholders, culminating with an action plan to fill any gaps you discover.
In this module, you’ll learn how to:
- Align the internal connections you need to serve your priority stakeholders.
- Assess how broadly you’re serving as a source of communication expertise for others.
- Build and share best practices for establishing new, lasting cross-functional relationships.
- Leverage your expanded network as a key contributor to your business and financial acumen.
Module 2: Capitalism in Brief, Value Creation in Focus
Wednesday, April 7, 2027; 3-4:30 p.m. EDT
How did we get here? We’ll take an incredibly quick (and fascinating) journey into how business thinking evolved to where it is today, with a particular focus on what it means to create value for stakeholders, how notions of value creation are changing and how emerging leaders like you are already positioned to shape what comes next for capitalism.
In this module, you’ll learn how to:
- Consider what value creation means to your key internal and external stakeholders.
- Draft an explanation of how you currently create value for your organization.
- Identify value creation beyond conventional business thinking.
- Anticipate how you could create greater value for your organization moving forward.
Module 3: Firm-Level Economics and Competitive Advantage
Wednesday, April 21, 2027; 3-4:30 p.m. EDT
What principles drive business decision-making? We’re going to narrow it down to three key fundamentals of economics that reverberate throughout your organization, whether you realize it or not. You know them because you experience their effects. Now you’ll incorporate them into your own thinking and strategy development and relate them to competitive advantage.
In this module, you’ll learn how to:
- Observe and identify the outcomes of firm-level economic principles at work.
- Unpack the components of competitive advantage.
- Connect your communication role to competitive advantage.
- Recognize your communication role as central to the information and expectations that move markets and drive business decisions.
Module 4: Financial Statements Demystified
Tuesday, April 27, 2027; 3-4:30 p.m. EDT
Is this Accounting 101? Most assuredly not. Instead, we’re going to dive into the standardized formats used for financial reporting across the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement, drawing from each the literal story it tells about your company’s financial performance and standing — both currently and across reporting periods. No calculations involved.
In this module, you’ll learn how to:
- Recognize the structured framework of each financial statement.
- Track how company performance changes over time, and why.
- Leverage your internal network and statement footnotes to go deeper on anomalies.
- Structure a similar financial performance review to teach your colleagues.
Module 5: Your Company’s Annual Report
Wednesday, May 5, 2027; 3-4:30 p.m. EDT
Want to know what matters most to your leaders? It’s in your annual report, in their words. Now that you’re viewing this report through your expanding business acumen, it will read differently to you than before. We’re going to unpack this treasure trove of strategic direction that is your guidebook to the goals you align with, the terms you use and the outcomes you track as a corporate communicator.
In this module, you’ll learn how to:
- Differentiate the annual report and the 10-K, and when to use each.
- Recognize what’s shifting in the company’s strategic direction over time.
- Align your work as a communicator to the company’s strategic priorities.
- Help your colleagues connect their daily work to the company’s success, closing the distance between “what I do” and “why it matters.”
Module 6: Back to You, and What Comes Next
Wednesday, May 12, 2027; 3-4:30 p.m. EDT
Where do we go from here? We return to where we started, with a focus on you, but a version of you that’s now less willing to sit quietly in business meetings. This concluding module sets you up for success by making a plan on how you’ll communicate and apply your business acumen to advance your company’s objectives, starting today.
In this module, you’ll learn how to:
- Update and communicate your value creation statement using your business acumen.
- Determine what in your work practices needs to start, stop and change so you can deliver on your value contribution.
- Navigate AI with the combined power of your business and communication acumen.
- Incorporate business acumen as part of your team’s DNA going forward.
