How Can Practitioners Make Their Crisis Communication Evidence-based?

May 15, 2024 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time)

Join this PRSA Learning Webinar to hear Jo Detavernier, APR, SCMP, principal of Detavernier Strategic Communication, explain what an evidence-based approach to crisis communication entails.

Detavernier will give his audience an introduction to established and emerging crisis communication research. Among the “classics” he will discuss are Situational Crisis Communication Theory and Stealing Thunder Theory. His venture into the realm of emerging research will include among other things recent findings about the impact of vocal cues on crisis communication and academic research into how heuristic biases lead communicators astray. Detavernier also will discuss how practitioners can implement academic insights into how they help organizations prepare for and conduct crisis communication.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what an “evidence-based” approach to their discipline entails.
  • Apply Situational Crisis Communication Theory and Stealing Thunder Theory.
  • Apply insights from a selection of research from emerging and adjacent fields of inquiry.
  • Incorporate an evidence-based approach into their crisis communication plans and training programs.
