Fred Gonzalez

Fred Gonzalez is the Managing Editor for AmericanAirlines’ in-flight publication, American Way, as well as their recently launched digital platform, AmericanWay.com. He works with the Miami-based editorial and art teams to produce the monthly magazine and daily website content, collaborates on staff story ideas as well as story pitches from freelance writers, all while making sure the airline’s brand message remains focused and shines through on the pages of the magazine and website.

A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Fred started his career as a sports writer for The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C. before moving on to The Washington Post. After 3 years as an Assistant Sports Editor, Fred joined The Miami Herald in the summer of 2004 as the Deputy Sports Editor, helping shape the Miami Herald’s sports coverage, especially during the Miami Heat’s 2006 run to the NBA championship and a pair of Miami-hosted Super Bowls in 2007 and 2010. Fred also started writing for the features department, with his online-only Red Carpet Huddle (asking celebrities questions about sports) and his column, The Dating Game, that was syndicated for two years. In that column Fred wrote about meeting, dating and getting engaged to his wife of 10 years (they now have two children, ages 6 and 8). In 2009 Fred joined Miami.com as it launched and was named Editor-In-Chief from 2010 to 2016. During that time he helped shape 3 web redesigns and a mobile version of the site that earned Florida Society of News Editors awards for Niche Web Site (2013 and 2014) and Innovation that Drives a Digital Audience (2013). In 2015 he was one of 16 people selected for McClatchy’s inaugural Design Thinking Incubator in Charlotte, a 2-week boot camp to learn the principles of Design Thinking and create new products for the company. Fred’s curiosity for discovery has allowed him to evolve his career over time as he continues to be a champion for creative, collaborative solutions.
