Byron Hughes

Byron Hughes is Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In this capacity he leads student advocacy, support, and mattering & belonging-focused areas providing overall leadership, management, and strategy to create a culture of student success and well-being. As dean, he and his team develop and support opportunities for students to thrive and flourish personally, socially, and academically.
Byron joined UT from Virginia Tech, where he served as the dean of students. Throughout his career he has held progressive leadership responsibilities in the areas of residence life, student conduct, and fraternity and sorority life. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in higher education from Virginia Tech, his master’s degree in student affairs in higher education from Ball State University, and his bachelor’s degree from Salisbury University.
