Getting It Right: Diversity and Inclusion in LGBTQ and Latinx Communications

On-Demand

In a focused conversation with PRSA Fellow Jaron Terry, Monica Trasandes, who has spent more than a decade in media relations and media training with GLAAD, will help PR and communications professionals understand issues faced by the LGBTQ and Latinx communities, and learn concrete steps to incorporate inclusiveness as a key driver in critical business functions of their work such as issues management, stakeholder or media relations, and community, integrated marketing or internal communications. Trasandes will discuss appropriate terminology and explore demographics and the current cultural climate, based on data/metrics revealed by GLAAD’s landmark study with the Harris Poll, “Accelerating Acceptance.” Mini case studies will illustrate where media “gets it wrong” and how communications professionals can “get it right.”

In addition, this broad-ranging conversation will explore results-oriented best practices for inclusive communications including audience identification, media advocacy and framing, messaging and storytelling. As a bonus, participants will hone core career competencies such as ethics, collaboration and leadership as they challenge themselves to better understand communities that may differ from their own. GLAAD is the driving force for accelerating acceptance of LGBTQ and Latinx people by leading the conversation, shaping the media narrative and changing the culture.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Understand through data and metrics what it means for language and terminology to be inclusive, and why it’s important, which will in turn increase your own cultural competence.
  • Attain lessons about results-oriented best practices for inclusiveness as a key driver in critical business functions of your work such as issues management, stakeholder or media relations, and community, integrated marketing or internal communications.
  • Understand the current, research-based climate of acceptance as it pertains to organizational positioning vis-à-vis brand identity, risk management and issues management.
  • Hone core career competencies such as ethics, collaboration and leadership as you challenge yourself to better understand communities that may differ from your own.
