From TV to Twitter: Next Generation Media Training

October 29, 2020 1:30 p.m. – 2:20 p.m.

Session Type: Tools & Techniques

COVID-19 and a dizzying array of new social and political issues make being a spokesperson more challenging than ever. Continuous, on-demand coverage, the collapse of community journalism, the integration of mainstream and social media, and the use of virtual interviews can confound even the most experienced communicator. Any misstep is likely to end up ridiculed on social media sites worldwide. How’s that for pressure? Being a successful spokesperson in today’s intense digital media world requires a solid knowledge of how media work as well as adopting new skills.

Topics include:
• The challenges news media currently face and how they affect spokespersons and their organizations.
• What the post-COVID media landscape will look like and what it means to PR professionals.
• Preparing for and conducting virtual interviews.
• Serving as a spokesperson during a crisis.

The session begins with an interactive quiz testing participants’ media knowledge, followed by a presentation on media relations trends, strategies and virtual interview techniques supported by multimedia samples and a live demonstration. This program is for professionals who currently serve as spokespersons and wish to improve their performance and those who are not experienced and want to learn new skills as well as practitioners who train and coach other spokespersons within their organizations

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Explain the disrupted media environment and the spokespersons’ changing role.
• Perform as a “virtual spokesperson,” including on video and in podcasts.
• Serve more effectively as a spokesperson during controversies and crises.
