A career in public relations offers many exciting opportunities for those creative, strategic minds who thrive on building connections and telling compelling stories. Even during these times of economic uncertainty, the field is seeing a lot of growth.
According to MyFuture, “About 27,100 openings for PR specialists are projected each year, on average, over the decade.” Additionally, a 2024 article from Redline shared that, “The global PR market is expected to reach $143.19 billion by 2029, growing at a 6.1% compound annual growth rate.”
Your PR journey is uniquely yours. The path to success in this field is not always linear, but with thoughtful planning and intentional steps, you can build a rewarding career that meets your professional goals while also allowing you to make a meaningful impact.
A solid foundation
Your PR journey begins with establishing a solid foundation that will support your growth for years to come. A degree in public relations, communications, journalism or a related field, typically serves as the entry point. The real magic happens, however, when you combine academic knowledge with hands-on experience. Internships are invaluable steppingstones that bridge the gap between the theory of the classroom and real-world application.
Equally important is developing a portfolio that tells the story of your professional growth with concrete examples of your capabilities and range. Early on, you can highlight examples from academia and internships. Never stop adding to and refining your portfolio, however. It may come in handy at any point in your career journey.
Essential skills to master
Effective, strategic communication lies at the heart of the public relations profession. The capacity to craft compelling narratives that resonate with different audiences across various platforms is crucial, but writing is only one item in your PR toolkit. Presentation skills are another, whether it comes to pitching stories to journalists, presenting campaign results to a client or leading a team meeting.
As we live in a digital-first world, technical proficiency is essential. Becoming adept with social media platforms, AI and LLMs, content management systems, and analytics tools will make you more valuable and versatile.
Mastery of these various skills will put you on the road to thinking more strategically and being able to create comprehensive campaigns that align with broader business objectives. In fact, according to SproutSocial, “88% of PR professionals say strategic planning will be one of the most important skills for success in the next five years, followed by media relations (77%) and social media (72%).”
The importance of relationships
No other industry relies as heavily on relationships as public relations. Your networking is your support system, your learning community, and often your pathway to exciting projects and career advancement opportunities. Industry events, conferences and workshops offer rich opportunities to connect with fellow professionals, potential mentors and thought leaders.
Social media, particularly LinkedIn, has transformed professional networking by making it easier to maintain connections and showcase your expertise. Don’t be afraid to reach out to professionals you admire. Many are willing to share their insights with someone genuinely interested in learning and growing.
The ongoing journey
Driven by technological advances, changing media consumption habits and shifting cultural conversations, the PR profession is ever evolving. Embracing continuous learning will be essential for your long-term success.
Set clear career goals and regularly reassess your progress. Ask for and be receptive to continuous feedback from supervisors, colleagues, and clients to identify areas for improvement and growth. Document your successes and be prepared to articulate the value you bring.
By building a strong foundation, developing essential skills, cultivating meaningful relationships and remaining adaptable to industry changes, you’ll be well-positioned to build a fulfilling career. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories and remember that every successful campaign, every strong relationship and every lesson learned contributes to your professional story.
