Observations on the Continued Decline of Print Newspapers

The findings are sobering and reflect a trend with significant national implications, and consequences that don’t show any signs of tapering off soon, if ever.
According to the Local News Initiative, a study conducted by the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, 3,200 print general interest newspapers have shut down across the nation in the past two decades.
Furthermore, a sizable majority of the print publications that remain in business have curtailed local coverage, dramatically reduced editorial staff, incorporate more wire service copy into each issue, and focus greater attention on digital advertising revenue sources.
