PRSA and the News Literacy Project, a leading provider of news literacy education, have partnered to create a series of webinars exclusively for PRSA and PRSSA members.

Under the heading of “Are You as News Literate as You Can Be,” the three sessions are designed to strengthen communications professionals’ effectiveness in counseling clients, improve their ability to recognize and battle disinformation, and incorporate news literacy into their overall strategies and daily practice.

“We are all in the news business, whether we’re acquiring it, understanding it, or communicating it, and there’s no such thing as too much knowledge about how it shapes everything we do,” said Dr. Felicia Blow, APR, PRSA’s 2022 chair.

The webinar schedule:

  • Session One (Oct. 4, 3-3:45 p.m. ET) will identify different information sources and how each has a unique purpose in the information landscape.
  • Session Two (Oct. 11, 3-3:45 p.m. ET) will focus on learning a nuanced approach to news media bias and the surprising ways it can creep into news coverage.
  • Session Three (Oct. 18, 3-3:45 p.m. ET) will help members understand misinformation and the motivations behind its spread.

John Silva, senior director of professional and community learning for the News Literacy Project, will lead each session. Silva spent several years in corporate telecommunications before becoming an educator.

Deadline Approaching for the Leadership Assembly

The deadline to apply by petition for an officer or director position for the 2023 Board of Directors is Thursday, Oct. 13.

Nominations of qualified candidates for election as Chair-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary or any voting directorships may be made by petition by at least 10 voting delegates of the Leadership Assembly. Petitions should be filed with the PRSA Secretary at least 30 days before the annual meeting, which takes place on Saturday, Nov. 12.

In addition to voting for the nominees for the 2023 Board, delegates at this year’s Assembly will vote on a proposal to amend the Bylaws as recommended by the Board and the Governance Committee.

Proposal 22-01 suggests that in Article III, Section 2 (b), the phrase that says delegates to the Leadership Assembly shall consist of “All current members of the Board” should be amended to say “All voting members of the Board.”

This change clarifies that only voting members of the PRSA Board of Directors serve as delegates to the Leadership Assembly. The complete text of the proposal is available in the Feedback for PRSA Community on MyPRSA.
