Every professional experiences days when deadlines pile up, meetings overlap, and unexpected problems demand immediate attention. While some pressure can improve focus and productivity, too much stress can quickly become overwhelming and counterproductive.

According to a recent Fast Company article, understanding how stress affects performance is key to staying productive and composed in high-pressure situations.

The article highlights the well-known Yerkes-Dodson principle, first introduced in 1908 by psychologists Robert Yerkes and John Dodson. Their research suggests that performance improves as energy and alertness increase — but only to a point. Once stress levels become too high, concentration, decision-making and productivity begin to decline. In other words, moderate pressure can help people perform at their best, but excessive stress pushes them beyond the “sweet spot.”

To regain balance during chaotic workdays, the article recommends several practical strategies designed to lower stress and restore focus.

One of the most effective techniques is practicing mindfulness or controlled breathing exercises. Even a few minutes of deep breathing can help slow racing thoughts and reduce tension. A simple method involves breathing in for four counts, holding for four counts, breathing out for four counts, and pausing again for four counts. This technique can help calm the nervous system and improve mental clarity.

Physical movement is another valuable stress-management tool. Taking a short walk, climbing stairs, or simply stepping away from the desk for a few minutes can relieve physical tension and refresh the mind. Small bursts of activity often improve focus and reduce mental fatigue.

Perspective also plays an important role in emotional balance. Keeping photos of loved ones nearby or taking a moment to appreciate life outside work can help reduce stress and create a healthier mindset.

Finally, completing a few quick, manageable tasks can create a sense of accomplishment on overwhelming days. Crossing small items off a to-do list can restore momentum and provide a psychological boost. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Take slow, deep breaths
  • Drink water regularly
  • Eat healthy snacks
  • Get up and move
  • Step outside briefly
  • Focus on one task at a time
