Best of Silver Anvil Award Presented to the Washington State Department of Ecology and PRR’s ‘Use Food Well’ Campaign
NEW YORK, May 15, 2025 – PRSA announced the winners of the 2025 Anvil Awards, recognizing the highest standards of performance in the profession, during a ceremony at New York’s Edison Ballroom this evening.
Silver Anvil Awards acknowledge the best strategic public relations campaigns of the year, as well as organizational excellence. Bronze Anvil Awards recognize outstanding public relations tactics that contribute to the success of overall programs or campaigns.
This year’s winning entries ranged from campaigns that focused on the response after natural disasters to campaigns that highlighted summer nutrition for kids and solutions to solving homelessness.
The 2025 Best of Silver Anvils Award was presented to PRR and the Washington State Department of Ecology’s 'Use Food Well' campaign.
The Washington State Department of Ecology, in partnership with PRR, launched the 'Use Food Well' campaign to address food waste and its environmental impacts. Rooted in extensive research and behavior change best practices, it aimed to reduce food waste by empowering Washington residents and businesses with simple, actionable steps such as meal planning, smart shopping, creative food usage and proper storage. The campaign emphasized the financial cost of food waste, with messaging like 'Food Waste Adds Up. Know the Cost,' resonating strongly with the target audience. It was fully translated into Spanish to ensure inclusivity, and it leveraged partnerships with Safeway/Albertsons and celebrity chef Joel Gamoran to amplify its reach. The initiative launched on April 1, 2024, during National Food Waste Prevention Week, with a suite of outreach materials, a bilingual website and media events across the state.
The 'Use Food Well' campaign exceeded its objectives, securing partnerships with 126 businesses, nonprofits and local governments, generating over 11 million media impressions and inspiring 31% of respondents to adopt new food waste prevention behaviors. Key highlights included in-store signage at 180 Safeway/Albertsons locations, mentions in their circular reaching over one million homes and creative cooking demonstrations by Chef Joel Gamoran that garnered significant media coverage.
“PRSA recognizing our Use Food Well campaign as Best of the Silver Anvils shows the power of the partnerships we have built in Washington,” said Jade Monroe, Washington State Department of Ecology Food Center lead. “Working with PRR to meet people where they are at with small, positive steps they can take to change their relationship with food has helped us make meaningful progress on our goal to cut edible food waste in our state in half by 2030. We are excited to share this campaign as a model for other states to help inspire everyone to Use Food Well.”
A total of 45 Silver Anvil Awards, 22 Bronze Anvil Awards, 62 Silver Anvil Awards of Excellence and 29 Bronze Anvil Awards of Commendation were presented during the evening. View the full list of winners here.
