The Importance of Multilingual Messaging

June 17, 2021 3:15 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.

In the United States, where more than 350 languages are spoken and 9% of the population does not speak English, language and linguistic differences represent a major barrier in the successful attainment of good outcomes. Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is yet another layer of disadvantage in the intersectional experience of refugees, immigrants, and citizens with limited proficiency in the dominant language.  “Equalizing communication through language access” provides an overview of the impact of language and provides strategies to companies and organizations to integrate language in their communications and strategic planning.

During a Pandemic, Weather Emergencies, and other natural and human disasters, Inclusion and Equity means that your communication strategy needs to be multilingual to reach your globalized local community. As a communicator your engagement efforts must be accurate and practical, not only because it makes business sense, but because it is the socially responsible thing to do.

The presentation will give you a framework of language disparities in the united states, the impact of such disparities on the limited English population, and strategies on how to approach language access to become truly inclusive in a multilingual community. We will discuss the main characteristics of professional interpreters and translators.
